Fwd: The easiest (and fastest) way to monetize your blog

Hello,

It's not ads.

It's not online courses either.

Coaching?

Nope, guess again.

Nothing against any of those strategies. I've made money from all of them.

But listen to this...

Not long ago, I did a little research project where I talked with hundreds of students who were working on monetizing their blogs.

Most were struggling. A few dozen were making a nice little side income of $1000 a month or more. A handful were crushing it and making big bucks.

As you might suspect, the ones crushing it were selling online courses. Pretty much no exceptions.

But most of them had also been working at it for YEARS. Sometimes decades.

For every student crushing it with online courses, there were also dozens who had tried and failed. Often miserably.

But here's the really interesting part:

One strategy pretty much ALWAYS worked. In fact, nearly every person in the $1000 or more group was using it.

And if you want to know what this magic strategy was, you only have to pay me... $1 million! *Dr. Evil laugh*

No, just kidding.

I'm going to teach you the whole strategy right now, plus link to some resources. In fact, this is actually the first email in an entire series where I talk about what I learned.

And I might as well start with the most important lesson I've learned in a decade of making my living on the interwebs. Here it is:

THE EASIEST PRODUCTS TO SELL YOUR AUDIENCE ARE THE ONES THEY ARE ALREADY BUYING

Think about it this way...

Right now, a percentage of your audience is spending money on products or services.

For my audience, it's hosting and courses. If you're talking to photographers, it's cameras and lenses. For parents of infants, probably diapers and stuff (I wouldn't know).

Regardless, there are things they are going to buy even if you say absolutely nothing. In fact, you couldn't stop them if you tried, because they've already made up their minds to buy it.

Simple enough, right?

Well, here's the part that'll blow your mind if you're a beginning blogger:

Companies will pay you to endorse products your audience already buys and loves.

In other words, imagine we're in Walmart. You fall in love with a T-shirt and say, "Jon, this T-shirt completes me as a person. I'm going to buy it."

I look at the T-shirt, nod sagely, and say, "I think you would look great in that T-shirt. You should buy it."

We then wander over to the checkout counter, you purchase the T-shirt, and the cashier hands me a few bucks for recommending a product you were ALREADY going to purchase.

Sound crazy?

Well, it happens every day on the Internet. It's called "affiliate marketing."

And it's the BEST way to monetize any new site. Here's why...

  1. You can totally suck at sales. After all, you're only promoting stuff people were going to buy anyway.
  2. Nobody hates you. Again, because you're only endorsing things they actually like.
  3. It's amazing for research. You can SEE what people are buying, and it'll give you all kinds of ideas for products to sell yourself.

Now, you're probably wondering...Why on earth would companies pay you to endorse stuff people were already going to buy?

The answer:

Because they're hoping you'll persuade at least a few people to purchase who weren't otherwise going to. It's also a bit of a "loss leader" strategy for most companies.

And some of these are big names, by the way. Even Amazon does this.

One of the other things I noticed from working with students is affiliate marketing works in EVERY niche. Doesn't matter what you are writing about. I think it's the only strategy where that's true.

Tomorrow, I'll give you some tips on how to find these affiliate programs. In the meantime, take a look at this in-depth guide we already published on affiliate marketing to get a walk-through of the basics:

It's an excellent intro. In future emails, we'll build on it and get into more and more advanced stuff.

My thanks in advance for your trouble, time, attention, and consideration.

Talk soon,

Jon
