Have you ever sat and wondered how do people get so rich? Are they rich from inheritance? Did they win the lottery? Did they come up with a brilliant invention?
Maybe you have wondered how you can get as rich! I know I HAVE!
In my past, I managed a lot of RICH people accounts at a brokerage firm that I worked for. I completed million-dollar transactions and made trades for people who seemed to have figured out the SUCCESS CODE. My biggest question was HOW MAN?
How are you so rich?! I NEED ANSWERS!
It’s All in the Mindset
When searching for these answers (I searched long and far too!), I learned that it’s not about the method (well sometimes it is), it’s more about the mindset! Rich people have a TOTALLY DIFFERENT MINDSET!
Self-made millionaire T. Harv Eker helps break that mindset down! After making millions and ultimately losing his fortune and having to start over, he analyzed the mindset and relationship that rich people have with their money! He wrote this phenomenal book to break down the secrets of the millionaire mind.
I finished reading this book a month ago and it is COMPLETELY LIFE-CHANGING!
Adapting the right mindset is the start of wealth and success. In the opening, Eker says:
“If you want to move to a higher level of life, you have to be willing to let go of some of your old ways of thinking and being and adopt new ones. The results will eventually speak for themselves.”
Once I finished reading this book, my mindset completely shifted! No, I’m not rich! YET! But it made me think about areas where my thoughts needed a different perspective. I dug deeper for needed self-reflection and the growth already has been astonishing! With that said, I HIGHLY recommend reading Secrets of the Millionaire Mind if you want to open the doors of becoming a millionaire!

Differences Between Rich People Vs Poor People
In the sections below, you’ll learn the mindset that it takes to be rich and things that keep people poor. What I love the most is regardless of your financial status, you can acquire this mindset shift in order to take the steps to acquire wealth.
Before we start, I want to mention that I’m not here to denigrate the poor. Sometimes a financial status is far beyond your control. I was born in a low-income household and I know first hand what poor looks like. This article serves to highlight the habits and thoughts of those who have acquired wealth in order to help motivate individuals. Again, I’m not a rich person! I simply want this to be a tool and motivate as we navigate through that ladder of success!
Time to crack the secrets to the millionaire mindset….
1. The rich act in spite of fear
The poor let fear stop them
Fear visits each of us from time to time. Regardless if you’re rich or poor, there’s no immunity for fear. Eker asks the question in Secrets of the Millionaire mind, “What is your ability to act in spite of fear?”
For those that seem to overcome fear, they tend to have more success. Why is this? It’s largely due to fear keeping you comfortable! When you’re comfortable, you tend not to put yourself in uncomfortable positions.
Some uncomfortable financial positions can be starting a new business, going after the unknown and investing. In fact, investing is big area where people tend to play it safe. An alarming amount of my peers have NEVER made a significant investment in there life.
Most fear losing money and won’t chance the opportunity of making money. This keeps people from investing in stocks, real estate and their own businesses. Instead, they keep their money in SAFE investments! In the investment community, we call these people risk-averse.
Risk-averse people keep their money in savings accounts, money market funds and CD’s which gives you back close to NADA! In fact, if you count in inflation, you lose money investing in these vehicles.
There’s a time to be risk-averse, one example is retirement. However, if you’re in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, then you can take risk and handle volatility because even if you lose, you have more time to take on wins. Low risk brings back low returns.

2. The rich manage their money well
The poor mismanage their money well
This is the one that I learned the hard way! Fresh out of college, my first purchase was a BRAND NEW car, it wasn’t the Range Rover I wanted, but my 2009 Chevy Cobalt was a Mercedes next to the lemon I had just got rid of. Well, I didn’t stop there! I went to acquire me some good ole credit card debt and started spending like I felt a new graduate should! Right? Wrong!
While there are many reasons that the rich are rich, one reason is that they manage their money well. They know that car payments and credit cards are not helpful when building wealth. If they do use their credit card, they are paying the full balance off at the end of the month.
In addition, the rich are also keeping track of their spending’s and keeping a budget. YES! You can be rich and have a budget! Once I started keeping a budget, I saw tremendous changes in how I managed my money.
The app that I recommend because it makes it super easy to track all your investments in one place is Personal Capital
3. The rich are committed to being rich
The poor want to be rich
I love this one because as I’m about to embark in Holy Matrimony, my commitment to someone has never been so REAL! I’m committed to my fiance’s and I relationship. For me, my commitment means putting in quality time to help my relationship grow, investing in things such as counseling in order to iron out any problems and ultimately being committed to each others happiness. Our relationship is successful but it didn’t happen overnight!
Building wealth takes a similar commitment. Just like relationships, you have to commit to doing the things that will help you obtain a wealthy life. Some commitments could be furthering your education, working long hours and improving your skill sets.
4. The rich constantly learn and grow
The poor think they already know.
Many don’t know this about me but I double majored in Finance and Media Production. I hate to call a degree a waste….but media production was an absolute waste. Why? Because even if I desired to go back into the field, I would find it challenging to land even an entry-level position. That’s because technology is always CHANGING! The way they did film and video 10 years ago (when I graduated) is not the same way they do it now!
This is not inclusive to just the media field! Many fields are always evolving. Being committed to learning and growing is a mindset Eker states the rich have. The poor stick to what they know and think they know everything.
I would imagine this was part Blockbusters fall to bankruptcy. They stuck to what they knew! Limited evolving! Successful businesses are ones that evolve and adapt.
5. The rich associate with positive, successful people
The poor associate with negative or unsuccessful people
Here’s where it gets kind of real! I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Who are you spending most of your time with?
Do your top 5 five sit around and gossip all day?
Do they push you up or drag you down?
In the Secrets of a Millionaire Mind, we learn that the rich persons mindset is to hang out with other successful people. These people are going to spend less time talking about the latest reality TV drama (less time doesn’t mean no time!) and talking about subjects that will help you get to the next level and build wealth. Topics ranging from business, investments, entrepreneurship and more.
Therefore, if you want to be rich and successful, you have to hang out with people who are not going to bring around negative vibes. Right now, I’m okay with my average! Ten years back, not so much. However, I can do a better job at reaching out and talking to more of the successfully people I have in my life.
6. The rich have their money work hard for them
The poor work hard for their money
“She works hard for the money, so hard for it honey
She works hard for the money, so you better treat her right”-Donna Summer
These lyrics to Donna Summer’s classic, “She Works Hard For The Money” may have been the anthem in the 80’s but its everything that I don’t want to do now! I don’t want to work hard for my money! No way! I want my money to work hard for me!
The rich have their money sweating, we’re talking shirt soaked kind of sweating! Their putting their money into multiple money-making vehicles such as stocks, business and real estate. They’re money is making money.
On the opposite end of that spectrum, poor people get into debt, work long hours just to pay off the debt they already spent!
7. The rich choose to get paid based on results
The poor choose to get paid based on time
Work hard, get good grades, graduate, get a good job, earn a steady paycheck. That’s what we’re told to do right? And for the most part we do it! We earn steady income that show us that the money we earn is commensurate to the amount of hours we work.
The thing about this is, most of us only have about 16 waking hours in each day. Meaning, our time is limited. Therefore, our ability to earn is limited in the traditional sense.
We learn in Secrets of a Millionaire Mind that the rich trade in those “secure” paychecks when it limits their ability for more gains. Instead they build businesses and get paid based on their results.
Sure! There’s risk! You can fail but you could also succeed and not put limits to your worth. The poor exchange their value for time and clock hours.
8. The rich are excellent receivers
The poor are poor receivers
Friend, you’ll need help along the way!
You are more than able to do this on your own because that’s how much I believe in you! However, it will be that much harder to do it on your own. Sometimes we limit our own growth and success based on this little thing called Pride. If your pride keeps you from asking for needed help, learn to put it in CHECK!
Now you may be thinking, excellent receivers? I’m great at that?! No I’m not talking about receiving gifts on Christmas. I’m talking about substantial help and knowledge from someone who can help you get to the next level.
It requires humility to admit there is something you aren’t knowledgeable of, and ask. Receiving mentorship is an excellent start. Some go about life thinking they know it all or ACTING as if they know it all. Those are the people who stay within the limitations of their knowledge.
9. The rich are willing to promote themselves and their value
The poor think negatively about selling and promotion
A couple of years ago I started a business with ItWorks which is a multi-level marketing company. It flopped!
At the time, I believed it was the product that made it flop. I reasoned that the fact that I couldn’t make sales were due people not wanting this product. If this was true, why was there other people making 5 figures and more a month selling ItWorks?
They were paying off debt and building their dream homes and I was catching up on the latest episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, convinced the product SUCKED and no one wanted it.
I realized, it had NOTHING to do with the product but EVERYTHING to do with me!
It was own fear that was scared to promote myself because of people might say or think. I didn’t actively tell people what I had to offer and the whole process was highly uncomfortable for me!
As I set behind my computer screen watching the other ItWorks distributors, they were promoting themselves unapologetically. The rich are willing to promote themselves while the poor let selling and promotion hold them back.
10. The rich believe “I create my life.”
Poor people believe “Life happens to me.”
I wanted to end the tips with my absolute favorite one! The rich believe that they create their life! I love this one because although I’m not rich yet, I have done a great job of taking direction of my life.
I was born in the lower class; section 8 and social security helped me eat and have shelter. Violence was prominent in the neighborhood that I grew up in. I had the choice accept this. Accept that life happens and these were the cards I was dealt.
Instead, I was proactively in control of my life. The troubles in my upbringing did not break me.
We have the power to create the life we deserve!
