Fwd: The best social media platform for your biz

Hey,

I once had a reader who couldn't decide on which social media platform she should focus on.

To make matters worst, it sure seems like everyone has their own favourites!

These are all real stuff that other peeps online have told me:
  • "It's obvious, you have to be on Facebook, the biggest social network on Earth!"
  • "Twitter is where everyone that's important is on."
  • "Instagram is awesome and I'm getting soo many followers everyday!"
  • "Aren't all bloggers on pinterest? It's such a game-changer!"
  • "You should be thinking of Snapchat, isn't it the in thing right now?"
  • "Isn't it obvious that live video connects better with your audience - anyone that's not on periscope is missing out!"

Hence, I wasn't at all surprised when she told me she wasn't quite sure who to listen to.

Over time I have grown to become really good at helping people identify how to promote their blogs with the best social media platform that really suit their needs.

Anyway, back to that reader of mine...

Here's what I told her:

1. Probe your existing community's thoughts

If you have an existing community, now is a fantastic time to ask them what's the platform that they're always hanging out at.
If you haven't built a community yet, find people who are your ideal customers and ask them.

You may be surprised at the answers you get. It may not always be Facebook.

2. Observe which social media platform you enjoy being on

I told her to stop listening to what others are doing - and start asking herself where SHE was most comfortable hanging out at.

Don't force yourself to use something that you hate!

For instance, i would not start with snapchat because i'm not really a spontaneous video kind of person.

I tend to over prepare and plan everything in advance, so I choose social media platforms that suit my character best.

With the myriad of social media platforms, you have no excuse to not show up anymore!

Even the most introvert of introverts can find something that they are comfortable with using.
And that's the power of online marketing.

When you become comfortable on one of the social media platforms, then you can branch out to another one that you may be less comfortable in.

3. Examine which medium you enjoy creating content in.

Do you prefer to write, express yourself with pictures, or record videos?

Some people love videos. Others hate it. Do something you're comfortable with or you won't be consistent.

For me, I love writing. I write fast. So I stick to my strengths :)

4. Check out where your closest competitors have a strong presence in

Sometimes it is helpful to look at where your competitors are getting huge results at.

This is especially useful…for practical reasons.

It is important to know where your competitors have a presence at, because it is really easy for you to target THEIR fans if you decide to be on the same platform too.

For example, you can use Facebook ads to target Facebook fans or comment on relevant Facebook groups if they have a strong Facebook presence. #protip #noproblem

5. Look at what your industry is like

Normally, this does not really matter, but at times it does.

For instance, if you are in a visual niche - then instagram and pinterest would make more sense to you.

Does a particular social media platform suit the niche you are in best?

This is actually very important because if there is an obvious winner in your niche, where a ton of your target audience frequently uses a specific platform, you may want to get on it despite your initial discomfort.

What matters MORE is how you use it and whether you are consistent on it.
