Building a List - What Works Today

Our second long hot and humid period of the summer is ending as dryer air is moving in today. Thus, we are having thunderstorms today. But the weather will still be quite pleasant and warm afterwards, but less humid and more comfortable.

The money is in the list.

That is the only real secret of online marketing you need to know. Build your list, build your audience, build your brand and build your tribe. Many people are growing audiences on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or Facebook but you don't own that relationship. You want to make sure that if one of these platforms changes their terms, you don't lose your audience. The best way to do that is still through email marketing.

Using Lead Magnets

Lead Magnet — noun — an irresistible offering a specific chunk of value to a prospect in exchange for their contact information. Lead magnets have become more sophisticated with some entrepreneurs. The basic idea is that you need to have something to give away. This is still true, but the quality of the freebie must be good nowadays - the bar has gone up - your freebies need to be current and great value.... gone are the days where you can throw up any old PLR PDF.

Start by thinking about growing your community.

• Toolkit/Resource List
• Video Training
• Software Download/Free Trial
• Discount
• Quiz/Survey
• Assessment/Test

Your lead magnet needs to be ultra-specific and only focus on one big thing, so it can be consumed quickly. Ideally, it will be something that solves your ideal client's problems and it needs to solve them NOW, with actionable steps they can take. You need to think about lead magnets with every form of traffic that's available to you because they help move your prospect beyond a simple inquiry.

Have A Social Strategy

The best way to grow your list right now but if you're not using social media, you're leaving at least some money on the table. The amount of visitors to social platforms means that sharing your lead magnet (or content that points to your lead magnet) can get you real subscribers who turn in to real buyers. The fact is, most of the processes you need to run a successful social media profile can be done on autopilot with the right software. There are always new social tools being released.

Scaling Your Lead Magnets

If your lead magnets are growing your list then making more of them will help you scale.

You see, what you're doing here is building up a raft of products that you can give away. They will be useful to your audience and can be included in follow-up emails as free gifts to keep people interested.

The real strategy here, however, is that you can scale a lot quicker when you have more stuff to give away. But, you don't just have to give away lead magnets.

Give Away Other Content

That pretty much covers the main strategies people use for getting subscribers onto their email list If you're already creating content and getting followings on platforms like Facebook or YouTube, you already have a list. Those people will already have interest in what you're putting out.

Because of that, it is much easier to get them to sign up to your list rather than trying to convert cold traffic. If you take anything away from the emails that I sent over the last week it's that the real method to growing your online audience in 2018 and beyond is creating engaging content. You see, we're at a point now where people are buying not from corporations as much as they are people.

Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, they rose to fame because people trusted them and they engaged people. They didn't start by saying "Hey, we've got this to sell..." They started by talking to their audience and sharing their dreams. In fact, that was at the core of every Apple advert.

And, that's what you should be doing now because, in the digital economy, there is so little that separates us, your audience needs you to have that dream. People buy from people so you need to engage as a person. You have to understand why you're doing what you're doing, beyond wanting to make money. This is a big concept but it goes to the core of owning the relationship with your audience.

The operative word here is 'relationship' and if you're not building that, you're not building anything.
