RE: #Income, @#!ncome Reports!;-p :) ;-) ; p
Friend,
Friend,
It's Raelyn & Jon-jon, here :););-p;);)
You've probably read an income report or two or three, in your journey online so far - basically, these are articles where bloggers talk about how much they've made in their online business for the month.
These income report also often include reflections from the entrepreneur on what has worked in their business for the month.
Recently I did a poll on whether you guys liked income reports or not, and the feedback was that you liked them when you actually learnt something from them.
A small portion of you did not like income reports because you felt they lacked value and found that well, they lacked value, euphemistically speaking. It would appear that the folks were bragging about their blog + biz.
Much has been written before about the dangers of boasting this way on social media. People generally, dislike braggarts. Many seem to see braggarts as ethically and morally suspect individuals. Perhaps even worse, they are deemed to possess somewhat exaggerated, self-serving motivations even when they act altruistically and are not posing as opportunists. Your social media connections may congratulate you when you brag and like or upvote your posts, but privately, they’ll evaluate you negatively, it would appear.
However, albeit the negative effects of bragging are all about how other people see, preceive and otherwise, evaluate the braggart. Stated differently, they are harmful social effects of boasting that the braggart may be oblivious to ( or choose to ignore ). You see...
When you brag, the act itself, followed by its acknowledgment by your social media network, will provide you with a dual, short-term/ long-term motivational boost. The jury is still out, however, on the long-term aspects.
Psychological research seems to suggest and provides, some support. Studies have shown that boasting, or what psychologists euphemistically call a form of self-enhancement, and self-exaggeration, produces interesting effects. It leads people to have exaggerated ideas about how much control they have over events, albeit circumstantial at best in their lives. It also makes them see their own actions as more influential than they really are, since they are employed as !nfluencers, for the most part. ( For example, after you’ve bragged about something, like income reports ...you'll feel in control of your work for the rest of the afternoon! ) And finally, bragging as a secondary effect, produces an optimistic view about the future. While these things may not necessarily be helpful in boosting your motivation in the long run, they can be effective for a short period when you are wilting away on a Wednesday afternoon.
The second motivational boost comes when your brag receives acknowledgment on social media from your social network of fans, friends, and followers. This link is based on research showing that when people receive 'positive' feedback from others, it boosts their self-esteem and resulting self-worth. They, feel less inadequate .and/or. insecure. What’s more, research on Instagram posts has shown that seeing a post get 'likes' actually increases brain activity in the areas that process information about rewards -
In a nutshell - the processing of reward expectations suggests an access to central representations of rewards which may be used for the control of goal-directed behavior, objectives. ... like making money ... neurons. reward. orbitofrontal cortex...
Another words, the more your social media friends 'like,' love, and upvote your brag ( even if they're really mocking it .or. being sarcastic about it ), the more motivated and energized you will feel.
Sadly, most income reports are kinda repetitive and don't contain much value beyond telling you how successful the blogger is in a formatted 'template' style document, so it's uniform each time presented and sometimes it's seems to be copied from one month to the other, one year to the other.
What seems to change are the numbers. Change however, is defined as a Mix of Order and 'Natural' Randomness. ( Change = Order + Randomness! )

One important point: To derive these benefits, albeit you should boast, strategically.
The key point and take away is that boasting can have useful short-term motivational benefits and benefit us when we really need such a jolt. But obviously, this approach to boost motivation needs to be used prudently and with an understanding of its downsides. The question of how to boast so as to minimize its negative social effects and maximize its positive psychological effects deserves its own post.
In a nutshell, the key to boasting effectively is this: Provide useful information in the boast. Boast about a topic that is close to your self-identity. Make a claim that is specific and narrow, affirm, assert and signal your competence in the domain that matters. We’ll expand on these points in greater detail in a future post about how to brag effectively on social media (if you must).
But I digress, sorry...Sadly, most income reports are kinda repetitive and don't contain much value beyond telling you how successful the blogger is in a formatted 'template' style document, so it's uniform each time presented and sometimes it's seems to be copied from one month to the other, one year to the other.
