Since you’re here …
… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading My Blog than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many newsletter organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The My Blog’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

" I appreciate there not being a paywall: it is more democratic for the media to be available for all and not a commodity to be purchased by a few. I’m happy to make a contribution so others with less means still have access to information."
    Thos. Sweden

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $1, you can support the My Blog – and it only

Seven (7) ways to your next great idea

Innovation is the lifeblood of any organization. We encourage innovation in the office through the use of team huddles and creative meeting spaces as a way to get the genius flowing. My experience has taught me that your next great idea could be right in front of your eyes without you realizing it.

One of my most impactful ah-ha moments hit me when I had an annual checkup and my physician instructed me to begin a multi-vitamin supplement. That’s when I started researching and I figured out that premium supplements were an untapped market for my company. It was an opportunity for a high-quality addition to our health, beauty and wellness products. You may never know where your next great idea will come from or what will provide the foundation to build it on. Enlarge

Great ideas and innovations often come from unexpected sources. Here are seven places you may not think to look for inspiration but you should.

1. Yourself: What obstacles are you facing? What solutions could be a great win for your business? Learning from past experiences, how can new thoughts have a greater impact? Some of the best inspiration comes while in the shower or drifting off to sleep, so always keep your phone or iPad handy for taking notes on such occasions.

2. Your friends and family: What are your friends and family talking about in their lives? What’s important to them? Listen to their stories and discussions. Even if it’s something as simple as the wrinkles on their faces or their children sleeping through the night, it could be inspire your next great product or service. How can your company play a part in their everyday lives?

3. Customers: Customers jump at the opportunity to share their feedback. When we made an intentional effort to listen to our consumers, we realized what a greater impact our promotions and product lines could have based on their feedback. Not only does it benefit your bottom line, but you also create happy and loyal customers.

4. Vendors: How are your vendors or strategic partners innovating? If you want to take your company to the next level, you need to have partners that can support change. People you meet: Networking is a great tool; now, think outside of the “going to networking events” box. When you’re out and about in your everyday life, strike up conversations with the people around you. Learn from the experiences of others.

5. Travel: Take time to explore. If you want to open a new market, visit that location. Learn from the locals or meet new vendors face-to-face. Also, by traveling, you may find a need you didn’t know existed. Gain inspiration from other cities and look for what is unique to those locations. Then, take that inspiration back to the drawing board.

6. Obstacles: Through the journey of finding a solution to a problem, you could wind up creating a solution that’s an even better fit for your company and consumers than you imagined. Sometimes what at first appears to be a failure can actually yield the most impressive results. When you’re facing an obstacle, personally or professionally, use it to as an opportunity for innovation.

7. Innovation: the action or process of innovating, innovation - a creation (a new device or process) resulting from study and experimentation.

The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need (ROI).

Innovation in its modern meaning is a "new idea, creative thoughts, new imaginations in form of device or method". Innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs.

What is the difference between innovation and invention? The words innovation and invention overlap semantically but are really quite distinct.. Invention can refer to a type of musical composition, a falsehood, a discovery, or any product of the imagination.
