Today I responded to an email from somebody who was considering becoming a consultant but had issues with becoming an "expert" in a short amount of time.
My guess is that many people have this issue so I wanted to repost my answer to this persons email here for everybody to see.
Take note of the vital differences in thinking/understanding:

PROSPECTS QUESTION: You need to be an expert in any service you provide to make money (especially when charging a high rate) however you can't become an expert in a service over night. No matter how much you try to cram into 90 days, if you're totally new to a subject it takes serious amounts of time to become an "expert".
MY ANSWER: It's not about becoming an "expert", it's about becoming better at something than your client is and knowing just enough to solve the problem which they are facing. This knowledge can be acquired within 90 days, even 30 days or less and my students do this every single day. This is in no way "shady" or unethical, provided we are solving the clients problem that's all that matters. Remember nobody pays us to "be smart" or to "know it all" they pay us to solve a problem and get a result.
PROSPECTS QUESTION: Following up that point, i can't guarantee myself becoming an expert, even with the training provided. You can't just read a bunch of articles related to a specific field and suddenly become experienced enough to charge people for my so called "expertise" on a particular subject.
MY ANSWER: We're not charging people for our expertise on a particular subject, that's not what we're doing at all. We're charging people to solve their problems. There is a clear difference just as stark as night and day. If we wanted to charge people for our expertise on a particular subject we would commit our lifetimes to study and become professors or lecturers, we learn just enough to solve our prospects problems.
Remember we're not academics trying to accumulate Nobel Prize winning knowledge on a particular topic - we're trying to acquire enough knowledge to solve a particular problem.
Value in this world is derived from solving problems not knowing things and most wealthy people focus on solving problems instead of pursuing expert status on topics.
If I had waited to become an "expert" before starting my consulting business...
I would still be stuck in my low paying corporate job...instead of living in a Manhattan highrise.
