Back in 2012, I attended David Klein's event 'Think Tank,' and it's there I met a blogger by the name of John Chow. We exchanged email addresses, and spoke a few times over those 3 days - all up, maybe 30 minutes of conversation.
About a week later I had an affiliate contest on for a new $10 ebook I'd written, where I was offering $10k cash for 1st prize. I emailed John and asked if he wanted to compete; he did, and 2 weeks later he won the cash. He's been promoting MOBE ever since, and just crossed $3,500,000 in commissions paid out.

The ability to extract money out of a list, is what separates the highest paid marketers from the rest.
You could have 2 marketers who both has access to the same list of 1,000 names and addresses. If one of them knows how to create irresistible offers, get a first-time buyer, and then successfully upsell to much higher-value and more expensive products, they could make more than 100X what the 2nd marketer makes.
That's why I shake my head when I see new marketers blaming their lack of sales entirely upon the list they have. Usually it's not so much the list; it's that they are terrible at marketing. We all start off as being terrible marketers.
You should see some of the offers I used to send out to my list - they were so bad, I'd laugh at them. But through a lot of practice, plus the necessity of desperately needing to make money to come up with next weeks rent and grocery money, I started to learn how direct-response marketing works. One of the first things you need to learn, is about segmentation.
That list of 1,000 names can be cut up a dozen ways, to create offers that more closely match what people in those segments want and will respond to. With good segmented marketing, you can easily extract 3X more money out of a list than by just firing out the same mass-produced broadcast offers to your whole list. Segmenting helps you make a lot more money based on the characteristics and behavior of that segment.
Example; let's say you're an affiliate marketer, and you're promoting someone's sales webinar. If the webinar is on a Thursday night, you should start promoting it a few days before. On Tuesday, you might send your list an email about the ‘exciting new webinar’ coming up. Let’s say 25% of your list opens the email— so 250 people.
Of those 250 people, let’s say 50 of them click the registration link. That means 200 people opened the email, but for some reason, they did not register for the webinar. So then what you could do, is email those 200 people separately and say, “Hey, I noticed you read my last email about the upcoming online workshop, but you didn’t register. I just wanted to tell you why should register..." - and then you give them a bunch of good reasons, followed by the webinar link.
Out of those 200 people, let’s say you get an additional 20 people who register. Including the first 50 you got, now you have 70 people registered out of the 250 who originally responded. You just increased your response rate by 40% - without burning out your entire list (you only emailed the people who opened the first email). You could also segment the people from your list that didn’t even open that email. So in that case, you have 750 people who didn’t open the email.
The best part is, you don't need to write a new email. They didn't see the first one. All you have to do is change the subject line. Every time I send out a broadcast email to my main list within MOBE, which is around 700,000 people, most of them never even open the email …
But if they don’t open it, then 24 hours later, I send the exact same email with a different subject line. And then sometimes, I'll segment all the people who still haven’t opened, and send out the same email a third time—with a different subject line. Why create extra work for yourself writing entirely new emails when all you need to do is change the subject line to get the email read?
You can also segment based on geographic region. If you have 1,000 subscribers on your list, most typical email auto-responders allow you to see where those people are located, geographically, based on their IP addresses. You can segment based on their state, country, whatever location you want.
For example, you could segment all your Australian subscribers. Let’s say out of your thousand email subscribers, you have 100 from Australia. You can separate these from the rest of your list, and then just email that 100. I recommend this strategy for promoting events overseas.
If the event was over in Australia, then it's going to be much harder getting people overseas to book flights and travel all the way to attend your event. Instead, go for the low-hanging fruit; the people who can more easily make the trip. You can also segment based on purchase history. For example, if they bought a product you’re promoting, you put in place another product in your ascension model.
Segment all the buyers of the first product, and then email an offer for the next program that compliments the first one they bought. These people are more likely to pay for the next product, versus the people who haven’t opened any emails. You shouldn’t be promoting the back-end program to people who haven’t even yet bought the front-end program. For example, with my company MOBE, if I’m promoting our affiliate opportunity, I’m promoting MTTB—our $49 front-end offer.
We have several of front-end offers for $49, and I always use these lower-priced offers for new leads. Usually, I won’t promote our back-end programs hard directly, because they’re more expensive, and are designed for more advanced students who've already consumed some of our entry-level programs. These are just some of the ways that you can segment your email list.
If you use the above basic email segmenting strategies, you can increase your bottom-line 200% - 300%, or even more. The beautiful thing about segmenting is it won't cost you any extra advertising dollars, because you already have those leads on your list. Segmenting is basically free money.
I want to give you one last tip. People often ask me, "what's the quickest way to put together an email sequence?" Usually they are asking, because they want to know if there's an easier way of writing out emails without having to spend days doing them all in one sitting.
